The city of Zaragoza and ACOMUJERZA have been celebrating and will keep doing so. On Sunday, August 20, the ACOMUJERZA cooperative, the city of Zaragoza, and the local Catholic parish Nuestra Señora del Pilar participtaed in the Corn Festival. During this annual event, the community celebrates the harvest and gives thanks to God for the fruits of their hard work.

The celebration begins at the church, which is decorated for the festival with corn plants and other decorations representing this ancestral grain that is so important for the Central American region.

Throughout the day there are food and drinks made with corn, games, contests, parades, and music, among other things. The activity that most interests the participants, however, is the contest to name the Queen of the Festival. The contest spans several events throughout the day, during which each of the participants has the chance to show their talents and model their much-anticipated dresses, which are made by the participants themselves with the help of their community. The dresses are beautifully decorated with pieces of the corn plant, corn leaves, corn cobs, etc. The Queen is chosen at the end of the day, finishing the celebration with a big party.

The opportunity to compete for the crown is open to all the women and girls in the community. There is no age restriction, so sometimes we even see little girls participating while holding their mom’s hand, as well as young women and elders. The festival is a wonderful opportunity to involve different sectors of the population in a community event, all coming together for the big party.

¡La ciudad de Zaragoza y ACOMUJERZA han celebrado y seguirán celebrando! El domingo 20 de agosto, la cooperativa ACOMUJERZA, la ciudad de Zaragoza, y la parroquía Nuestra Señora del Pilar celebraron el Festival de Maíz. La festividad anual celebra la cosecha de este grano y es una forma de agradecer a Dios por los frutos de meses de arduo trabajo.

La celebración comienza en la iglesia, que para este día se decora con milpa (planta del maíz) dentro de la iglesia y diversas otras decoraciones que hacen alusión a este grano ancestral tan importante en la región.

Después de esto, durante el día hay diversas actividades, juegos, concursos, comidas y bebidas derivadas del maíz, desfiles, música, entre muchas más cosas. Pero la actividad que más causa intriga en todos los participantes es el concurso de la elección de la Reina del Festival, el cual se divide en diversos eventos durante el día, donde cada una de las participantes tiene la oportunidad de mostrar sus talentos y modelar los tan ansiados vestidos, los cuales son confeccionados por las mismas participantes con la ayuda de su comunidad siendo bellamente adornados por derivados del maíz, ya sean las hojas, granos, etc. La Reina es elegida al final del día, terminando con una gran fiesta.

La oportunidad de portar la corona está disponible para todas las mujeres y niñas de la ciudad, no existe un límite de edad, por lo que se ven niñas muy pequeñas participando mientras sostienen la mano de su mamá, además jóvenes y mujeres adultas. El festival es una gran oportunidad y una muy bonita actividad que involucra a los distintos sectores de la población a unirse y ser parte de esta gran fiesta.
