On Thursday, May 5, the northern and southern communities that are part of Sister Parish and some invited friends had the opportunity to meet Cristina Coronado and hear about her work on the Mexico-United States border. Cristina works with the Migrant Ministry of the Missionary Society of St Columban. She supports the local Diocese’s Office of Human Mobility and coordinates a project to support migrants with the Cathedral.

The call was organized so that participants could learn about the reality for migrants on the border and clarify questions about the changing government measures and U.S. laws.

Cristina explained about the risk that migrants run when requesting the services of the “coyotes” or “polleros” (those that are hired to take undocumented people across the border). Although many people assume massive debt to hire the “coyote”, there are no guarantees on the journey, as there are many risks including being abandoned, arrested by border authorities, kidnapped, or even killed along the way.

El día jueves 5 de mayo, las comunidades de norte y sur que conforman Iglesias Hermanas y algunos amigos invitados, tuvieron la oportunidad de conocer a Cristina Coronado y su trabajo en la frontera de México – Estados Unidos, específicamente en Juárez. Cristina trabaja con el Ministerio de Migrantes de la Sociedad Misionera de San Columbano, donde ella es parte de la comunidad y encargada de la coordinación del Ministerio en la frontera México – USA; a la vez, apoya a la Diócesis local en el Ministerio de Movilidad Humana de la Dirección de Ciudad Juárez y coordina el Proyecto Catedral de apoyo a los Migrantes.

El motivo del evento fue informar a todos los presentes sobre la realidad dela frontera, historias de migrantes, conocer sobre las medidas que los gobiernos están tomando y aclarar dudas.

Cristina explicó sobre el riesgo que corren los migrantes al solicitar los servicios de los llamados “coyotes” o “polleros” (traficantes de personas indocumentadas), ya que no existe la certeza de que estas personas cumplan con la tarea de hacer cruzar la frontera sanas y salvas a las personas, pero existen muchos riesgos que incluyen ser abandonados a mitad del camino, entregados a las autoridades fronterizas, secuestros e incluso la muerte en el camino.
