Mark 6:7-10
Calling the Twelve to him, he sent them our two by two and gave them authority over evil spirits. These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff – no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. Wear sandals, but not an extra tunic. Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town…”
This passage often reminds me what Jesus might instruct us to do if he were sending us off on a delegation.
Quite often, my preparations to travel on a delegation include a lot of worry and thought about what I will take with me. Exactly which clothes and shoes will be the best? What are all those necessities that I think I need to get through a day? I can become a little obsessed with filling my bag with all the things I think I might need and getting it just right.
At the same time, we as delegates spend months in advance attending orientation sessions and learning all about our sister parish relationship and the culture of the country we are about to visit. We read about the country of our sister parish. We listen to speakers about the political, cultural and social history. I fill my head with everything I think I should know before I travel.
What Jesus is instructing in this passage to his apostles is quite the opposite – take almost nothing. Essentially he tells them to take what they are wearing and a walking stick. Since everyone walked everywhere at this time, the staff was basically a part of their attire. I imagine this is telling us something like “don’t take a sweater or umbrella, just the clothes you are wearing. No change of shoes or backpack nor a snack.” If I don’t take anything with me to eat or money to buy anything, how will I survive? I would have to rely on the generosity of others.
Therein lies the invitation. Go empty. Go vulnerable. Allow yourself to be filled with the generosity of others. Be open to others taking care of you and providing for your needs. Accept the gifts of love and care from your host family and the other members of our sister parish community. Trust that you will be taken care of.
As human beings we have the same basic physical needs – for shelter and food and protection. When we accept the gifts of our hosts to provide for these needs we connect at the most basic level – at the level of our humanity. Just like a baby relies on its family from the time it is born. When we open ourselves to being cared for in this way, we are then able to open ourselves to being vulnerable and sharing emotionally and spiritually as well. This is where the bonds of sisterhood (of hermanamiento) begin. These bonds have deepened over the more than 25 years of our relationship together and each delegation builds on these bonds as we open ourselves and arrive empty.
So I invite you as you take part in this delegation to leave behind your baggage. Bring nothing extra along.
We may not be able to stay in each other’s homes or provide for each other’s physical needs in the same way on this virtual delegation, but we can still arrive to the conversations empty, open and willing to be vulnerable. We can fill each other with our love and care as we listen to and share our stories as we deepen our bonds of hermanamiento.

Reflexión – Jesús llama a los doce

Después llamó a los doce, y comenzó a enviarlos de dos en dos; y les dio autoridad sobre los espíritus inmundos. Y les mandó que no llevasen nada para el camino, sino solamente un bordón; ni alforja, ni pan, ni dinero en el cinto, sino que calzasen sandalias, y no vistiesen dos túnicas. Y les dijo: “Dondequiera que entréis en una casa, posad en ella hasta que salgáis de aquel lugar.”
Este pasaje frecuentemente me recuerda que Jesus nos instruye a vivir como si nos mandara a una delegación.
A menudo, los preparativos para un viaje de delegación incluye preocuparme en que voy a llevar conmigo. Exactamente qué ropa y qué zapatos serán los mejores? ¿Cuáles son las necesidades que creo tener para pasar el día? Puedo obsesionarme un poco con llenar mi equipaje con todas las cosas que pienso que pudiera necesitar.
Al mismo tiempo, como delegados pasamos meses de antemano en reuniones de orientación y aprendizaje sobre nuestra relación de Iglesias Hermanas y la cultura del país que estamos a punto de visitar. Leo sobre el país de nuestro hermanamiento. Oigo a los presentadores hablar sobre la historia política, cultural y social. Lleno mi mente con todo lo que creo debo saber para el viaje.
Lo que Jesus nos pide en este pasaje a sus apóstoles es todo lo contrario – lleven consigo casi nada. Esencialmente nos dice que debemos llevar lo que estamos usando y un bordón para caminar. Ya que todos caminaban en ese entonces, el bordón era parte de su vestimenta. Me imagino que nos dice algo como “no lleves un suéter o sombrilla, solo la ropa que estás usando. No cambies tus zapatos o mochila o refaccion.” Si no llevo nada conmigo para comer o dinero para comprar algo, ¿cómo sobreviviré? Tendría que depender de la generosidad de otros.
Allí está la invitación. Anda sin nada. Anda vulnerable. Deja que otros te llenen con su generosidad. Deja que otros te cuiden y provean tus necesidades. Acepta los regalos de amor y cariño de tu familia hospedadora y otros miembros de nuestra comunidad de Iglesias Hermanas. Confía en que ellos te cuidarán.
Como humanos tenemos varias necesidades físicas para asegurarnos de tener albergue y alimento. Cuando aceptamos los regalos que nos brindan nuestros anfitriones para proveer a nuestras necesidades.
Así que te invito a que participes en esta delegación y dejes atrás tu equipaje. No traigas nada extra contigo.
En esta delegación virtual no podremos hospedarnos con nuestros anfitriones que nos proveerian de las necesidades físicas como en otras oportunidades, pero aún podemos llegar a las conversaciones en blanco, abiertos y dispuestos a ser vulnerables. Podemos llenarnos con el amor y el cariño mientras oímos y compartimos nuestras historias, mientras profundizamos en nuestros lazos de hermanamiento.
