A delegate from St Joan of Arc shared the following message during the mass in Tierra Nueva 2 at the end of their August delegation.

My name is Meghan.  It is an honor to represent the ten delegates from your sister parish Saint Joan of Arc in Minnesota in the United States.  We are a group of ten women, three mothers with their daughters.  We are so happy to be here.

The Sister Parish organization connects a church in the United States with a church in Central America to promote peace justice with visits of delegates from the north to the south and south to north.  During a delegation visit the delegates live in the homes of the members of the community, learn about their culture, pray, eat, laugh, and cry together.  We do all of this to demonstrate and strengthen our commitment to solidarity, equality, and mutual respect amongst all of us in the hermanamiento with God at the center of it all.  We share our lives during the visits, but also exchange letters, connect on videocalls and through prayer before and after, too in order to share the love that comes from our hearts and the kilometers that separate us do not matter.

By the power of the Holy Spirit, Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe in Tierra Nueva 2 and St Joan of Arc in Minneapolis were joined together in this hermanamiento almost 30 years ago.  The early members were Mindy and her mom Mary from Saint Joan of Arc and Paulina, Miriam, Paul, Efrain, Estela, Bernardo, Auri, Maximina, Gregorio and Estela, Mari, Amparito from Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.  Thanks to their leadership and vision and that of those that have followed them, we are still together today, putting ourselves in the reality of our brothers and sisters to build interdependent communities that promote the dignity of all people.

In today´s gospel of Matthew (15:21-28) you will hear other fundamental themes of our hermanamiento: perseverance, love, and faith.  The Canaanite woman, like many strong women of Tierra Nueva 2, did not stop asking Jesus to cure her daughter.  Her perseverance paid off when Jesus proclaimed, “Oh woman, great is your faith!  Let it be done for you as you wish.”

The pandemic put our hermanamiento to the test.  In 2020 after months of preparation the delegation had to be canceled.  Cathy, Anne, Mindy, Mary and I were so disappointed.  As you guys remember, it was a time of loss, isolation, and sadness, but you guys in Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe never abandoned us.  Like the creative and smart Canaanite woman, our hermanamiento persevered with love and faith.  For example, the Peregrinos bible study groups joined their meetings and met on Zoom, even adding new members.  We were able to invite each other to graduation ceremonies, weddings, and funerals all on video calls.  We did two delegations on video calls, too.  During one of them, Cathy saw the living room in the house of Juan and Blanca.  Now she has seen this same living room in person, not just in a little box on the screen.  The action that taught us from Saint Joan of Arc the most about solidarity, love and faith began in the women’s group here.  With support from the Sister Parish committees in Tierra Nueva 2 and St Joan of Arc, the women spent their funds, time, and effort to buy food for families in need when the pandemic started.  The committee of the hermanamiento delivered the food to the families’ homes with the faith that God would protect them.  We, at Saint Joan of Arc have learned so much from your perseverance and respect you so much.

After all this, thank God, we are finally here to be together face to face and to enjoy so many hugs.  We are so thankful for the warm welcome at the airport when we arrived, for the incredible hospitality of our host families, Zumba and crafts with the women’s group, games with the scholarship students and Cristo Vive youth group, and praying with the Peregrinos.  We traveled to the countryside with our sisters, Albertina and Mari.  We went to the Peace Park in Santiago de Atitlan and visited the Memory Museum in Guatemala City.  We learned a lot about the oppression and were moved so much by the reconciliation.   All of these have confirmed that our hermanamiento is as strong as before the pandemic.  The most impactful moment happened during a meeting of the committee of the hermanamiento.  We were sharing about all that we had lost during the pandemic, crying, hugging and very sad.  Meanwhile the youth of both churches were playing games right next door, a very loud game filled with a lot of laughter.  But the loud interruptions did not bother us because it was a perfect example of our hermanamiento sharing our grief and our joy like family.  As it says in today´s first reading from Isaiah “them I will make joyful in my house of prayer.” (56:1, 6-7)

The readings today invite us to strengthen our hermanamiento with perseverance, love, and faith.  We have a vision of an even more profound commitment with more letters, video calls and prayers and a wider commitment with new members in our two churches.  We invite you to join us.  One way I have been involved is through my prayer partner, Odilia.  She and I were paired up many years ago and we pray for each other a lot.  If you would like to become a prayer partner, see me or a member of the hermanamiento after mass.  In conclusion, thank you dear brothers and sisters in Christ, for so many years of perseverance, love, and faith.

La organización de Iglesias Hermanas conecta una iglesia en los Estados Unidos con una iglesia en Centroamérica para promover la paz y la justicia con visitas de delegados del norte al sur y del sur al norte. Durante la visita de una delegación, los delegados viven en las casas de los miembros de la comunidad, aprenden sobre su cultura, oran, comen, ríen y lloran juntos. Hacemos todo esto para demostrar y fortalecer nuestro compromiso con la solidaridad, la igualdad y el respeto mutuo entre todos nosotros en el hermanamiento, con Dios en el centro de todo. Compartimos nuestras vidas durante las visitas, pero también intercambiamos cartas, nos conectamos por videollamadas y oramos el uno por el otro antes y después de la visita, también para compartir el amor que nace de nuestros corazones. No importan los kilómetros que nos separan.

Gracias a Dios nuestras dos iglesias, Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe en Tierra Nueva 2 y Santa Juan de Arco en Minneapolis, se unieron hace casi 30 años.  Unos de los miembros al principio fueron Mindy y su mamá Mary de Santa Juana de Arco y Miriam, Paul, Auri, Efrain, Estela, Bernardo, Maximina, Gregorio, Mari, Amparito de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Gracias a su liderazgo y visión y la de los que les han seguido, hoy estamos juntos, comprometidos a ponernos en la realidad de nuestros hermanos y hermanas para construir comunidades interdependientes que promueven la dignidad de todas las personas.

En el Evangelio de hoy de Mateo (15:21-28) escucharemos otros temas fundamentales de nuestro hermanamiento: la perseverancia, el amor y la fe. La mujer cananea, como muchas mujeres fuertes de Tierra Nueva 2, no dejaba de pedirle a Jesús que curara a su hija. Su perseverancia valió la pena cuando Jesús proclamó: “¡Oh mujer, grande es tu fe! Que se cumpla lo que deseas.”

La pandemia puso a prueba nuestro hermanamiento. En 2020 después de meses de preparación la delegación tuvo que ser cancelada. Cathy, Anne, Mindy, Mary y yo estábamos tan decepcionadas. Como ustedes recuerdan, fue un tiempo de pérdida, aislamiento y tristeza, pero ustedes de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe nunca nos abandonaron. Como la mujer cananea tan creativa y lista, nuestro hermanamiento perseveró con amor y fe. Por ejemplo, los grupos de estudio bíblico de Peregrinos juntaron sus reuniones y las hicieron en Zoom, agregando nuevos miembros. Pudimos invitarnos a ceremonias de graduación, bodas y funerales, todo en videollamadas. También hicimos dos delegaciones por videollamadas. Durante uno, Cathy vio la sala de la casa de Juan y Blanca. Ahora ella ha visto esta misma sala en persona, no solo en una cajita en la pantalla. Lo que más nos enseñó a nosotros de Santa Juana de Arco sobre la solidaridad, el amor y la fe empezó con el grupo de mujeres de aquí. Con el apoyo del hermanamiento de Tierra Nueva y Santa Juana se hicieron esfuerzos para comprar los alimentos para las familias necesitadas por COVID. Unos del comité del hermanamiento entregaron los alimentos a los hogares de las familias con la fe de que Dios los protegería. Nosotros, en Santa Juana de Arco, hemos aprendido tanto de su perseverancia y los respetamos mucho.

Después de todo esto, gracias a Dios, por fin estamos aquí para estar juntos cara a cara con ustedes y disfrutar de muchos abrazos. Estamos muy agradecidas por la bienvenida calurosa en el aeropuerto cuando llegamos, por la increíble hospitalidad de nuestras familias hospedadoras, Zumba y manualidades con el grupo de mujeres, juegos con los estudiantes becados y el grupo de jóvenes Cristo Vive, y oración con los Peregrinos. Viajamos al campo con nuestras hermanas Albertina y Mari.  En Santiago de Atitlan fuimos al Parque de Paz al regreso a la Casa de la Memoria.  Estas experiencias nos enseñaron y movían tanto sobre la opresión y reconciliación.  Todos han confirmado que nuestro hermanamiento sigue tan fuerte como antes de la pandemia. El momento más impactante pasó durante una reunión del comité del hermanamiento. Estábamos compartiendo todo lo que habíamos perdido durante la pandemia, llorando, abrazándonos y muy tristes. Mientras tanto, los jóvenes de los dos iglesias estaban jugando juegos en el salón a la par, un juego muy ruidoso lleno de muchas risas. Pero las fuertes interrupciones no nos molestaron porque fue un ejemplo perfecto de nuestro hermanamiento compartiendo nuestra aflicción y nuestra alegría como familia. Como dice en la primera lectura de hoy de Isaías “les llevaré con alegría en mi casa de oración”. (56:1, 6-7)

Las lecturas de hoy nos invitan a fortalecer nuestro hermanamiento con perseverancia, amor y fe. Tenemos una visión de un compromiso aún más profundo con más cartas, videollamadas y oraciones y un compromiso más amplio con nuevos miembros en nuestras dos iglesias. Les invitamos a unirse con el hermanamiento. Una forma en que me he involucrado es con mi compañera de oración, Odilia. Ella y yo estuvimos emparejada hace muchos años y oramos el uno por el otro mucho. Si desea involucrarse así, hablen conmigo o con un miembro del hermanamiento después de la misa.
