Saint Joan of Arc and Tierra Nueva 2 organized the Virtual Delegation in August 2022. Members of Saint Joan of Arc shared a lovley message at the opening mass on Sunday, August 14. The mass began with Jason Haugland, Cathy Anhut and Mindy Ahler welcoming the participants and inaugurating delegation week. Brothers and sisters of Tierra Nueva 2 had the opportunity to participate through the live broadcast of the mass.
Jason:– Good morning! My name is Jason Haugland and I have been here at St. Joan of Arc since 2013 along with my family: my wife Cathy and our four boys: Elijah, Caleb, Jonas, and Dominic. I am happy also to welcome you this morning on behalf of our Sister Parish relationship at St. Joan of Arc.
For many years, we have walked together with our Community in Tierra Nueva Dos in Guatemala. We hope to return soon to in-person delegations, but this week we have a virtual delegation – more on that later.
I initially became interested in Sister Parish because I thought it might help my Spanish while helping people in Guatemala. Once I joined Sister Parish, I realized sister parish was about being in solidarity and being on a journey with our brothers and sisters in Central America. I have learned so much from the people of TN2 and our other partner parishes. Additionally, I have been able to connect with my fellow Minnesota Sister Parish members building relationships right here in Minnesota!
Today we welcome you wherever you are on your journey, and welcome fellow parishioners Mindy Ahler and Cathy Anhut, to share the awesome story of Sister Parish.
Cathy:– Hello, I am Cathy Anhut. My husband Charlie and I have been members of St. Joan’s for about 10 years. At St. Joan’s I have been involved in Welcome the Stranger Ministry, Mobile Loaves Twin Cities, and for the last 3 years I’ve been a newer member of our Sister Parish ministry. My full-time work until recently (yeah for retirement!!!) was teaching at Academy of Holy Angels High School in Richfield. There I taught religion and music, Campus Ministry and was the school’s Liturgy coordinator.
Mindy: – My name is Mindy Ahler. I’ve been coming to St. Joan’s for over 25 years, and my constant link has been Sister Parish. I became involved after the first delegation returned from Tierra Nueva Dos in Guatemala in 1995. When I heard them speak about the experience, I immediately felt the call to go and see for myself. Since then, I have been on 6 delegations to Guatemala, and have been involved in our SJA Sister Parish committee, as well as serving on the board of Sister Parish, Inc.
Cathy:– My husband and I have been able to travel in many cultures and countries around the world, but I have not been to Guatemala. I signed up for the St. Joan of Arc delegation to TNII in 2020, but that trip was canceled because of COVID. However, through our preparation, and in being part of the Sister Parish community, I have come to see how special this ministry is to our parish, and to the new friends I have met in Guatemala through virtual delegations, skype and zoom meetings. I have heard about the impact our scholarships have made in the lives of youth in the parish, I have been inspired by the wonderful work of the Women’s Group in TNII, and I have marveled at the dedication of the parishioners there as they care for their community during this pandemic, much like what we have done here at St. Joan’s. Their experiences of resilience and perseverance are amazing, and I am looking forward to someday meeting all these new friends in person.
Mindy: – I remember the first time I went on a delegation to TN2. What I noticed most was the strong sense of community. People lived with their family, and other family members lived close by. They were always stopping in to see one another, to borrow something, to return something, to discuss something, to ask for advice. They happily greet one another as they are walking through the community – they stop to ask questions, or discuss a current topic, or ask about a sick family member. They have their own organized emergency response network because government services are not always available. I realized how our U.S. culture of individualism creates a feeling that each person is responsible for themselves, and this has created a deficit of community. I knew that this was something I really wanted to address in my own life, so I became more deeply involved in St. Joan’s and the Sister Parish committee. And here I am still with a community that I know I can count on, and they can count on me. At the difficult and joyful times in my life, it means so much to know that I am being held in prayer by a global community – here at SJA and in TN2.
Cathy:– I think the main reason I have joined our Welcome the Stranger and Sister Parish ministries was for that gift of building relationships through encounter and accompaniment. With Welcome the Stranger, I’ve been able to travel to the U.S. southern border and meet people who are seeking asylum in our country. Here at home, I continue to accompany a young woman and her child, from Uganda, as they build a new life. These encounters have made a huge difference in my life, and by joining with our Sister Parish, I look forward to more. I can’t wait to make my pilgrimage to our Sister Parish with open arms and an open heart, to grow in faith alongside with friends in Tierra Nueva Dos.
Mindy:– I’m on my third career, starting with technology consulting, through fair trade, and now climate advocacy. That transition has been influenced by my involvement with Sister Parish, which has given me a sense of my place in the global community, and my responsibility to act for social justice. It shifted me from a more academic understanding of global problems to a personal one – from my head to my heart. I am now a global citizen. I can see the impact of policies and behaviors in the U.S. on my family in TN2, and how climate change is already exacerbating those struggles. Though I work locally, I think globally.
Cathy:– In our hearts, we know the power of relationships to transform us and our world. Today we hear the words of Pope Francis, who could have been talking about Sister Parish when he said: “Let us dream, then, as a single human family, as fellow travelers sharing the same flesh, as children of the same earth which is our common home, each of us bringing the richness of his or her beliefs and convictions, each of us with his or her own voice, brothers and sisters all.”
Mindy:– Our Sister Parish relationship is a long-term commitment. In 27 years, we have watched each other grow and change, and we have mourned the passing of beloved friends. We have walked and prayed through world events, loss and struggle and injustice, together. We have laughed loudly as we have cooked, sung and danced, played Twister, and shivered in a trek across frozen Grove Lake together. We have challenged each other to look at ourselves more closely and do better as individuals and as communities living out our Gospel calling. Santa Juana de Arco y Tierra Nueva 2 organizaron la Delegación Virtual en agosto de 2022. Miembros de Santa Juana de Arco compartieron un lindo mensaje en la misa de inauguración el día domingo 14, la misa comenzó con Jason Haugland, dando la bienvenida a los participantes e inaugurando la semana de la delegación, al presentar a los hermanos y hermanas de Tierra Nueva 2 que tuvieron la oportunidad de participar mediante la transmisión en vivo de la iglesia. A continuación, el mensaje:
Jason: – ¡Buenos días! Mi nombre es Jason Haugland y he estado aquí en Santa Juana de Arco desde 2013 junto con mi familia: mi esposa Cathy y nuestros cuatro hijos: Elijah, Caleb, Jonas y Dominic.
También estoy feliz de darles la bienvenida esta mañana en nombre de nuestra relación con Iglesias Hermanas. Durante muchos años hemos caminado junto a nuestra Comunidad en Tierra Nueva Dos en Guatemala. Esperamos volver pronto a las delegaciones en persona, pero esta semana tenemos una delegación virtual, hablaremos más sobre eso en algunos minutos.
Inicialmente me interesé en Iglesias Hermanas porque pensé que podría ayudarme con mi español mientras ayudaba a las personas en Guatemala. Cuando me uní a Iglesias Hermanas, entendí que estamos en solidaridad y que estamos juntos en un viaje con nuestros hermanos y hermanas en América Central. He aprendido mucho gracias a mis amigos de Tierra Nueva Dos. ¡Además, he podido conectarme con los miembros de Iglesias Hermanas de Minnesota construyendo relaciones aquí en Minnesota!
Hoy le damos la bienvenida dondequiera que este en su camino , y le damos la bienvenida a los miembros de Iglesias Hermanas: Mindy Ahler y Cathy Anhut, quienes compartiran su historia.
Cathy:– Hola, me llamo Cathy Anhut. Mi esposo Charlie y yo hemos sido miembros de Santa Juana de Arco alrededor de 10 años. En esta parroquia hemos participado en el ministerio de Bienvenida al Extraño, Panes Móviles de las ciudades gemelas, y por los últimos 3 años he sido un miembro de nuestro ministerio de Iglesias Hermanas. Mi trabajo era de maestra en el colegio de Diversificado Academia de los Ángeles Santos en la ciudad de Richfield, hace poco me jubilé. Allí enseñé religión, música y también era la coordinadora de la Liturgia del colegio.
Mindy:– Me llamo Mindy Ahler. He venido a Santa Juana de Arco por más de 25 años, y mi conexión ha sido Iglesias Hermanas. Empecé poco después de que la primera delegación regresara de Tierra Nueva Dos en Guatemala en 1995. Cuando los oí hablar de la experiencia, inmediatamente sentí el llamado a ir y verlo por mí misma. Desde entonces, he participado en 6 delegaciones a Guatemala y he participado en el comité de Iglesias Hermanas de Santa Juana, así como he servido en la junta directiva de Iglesias Hermanas.
Cathy:– Mi esposo y yo hemos viajado a diferentes culturas y diferentes países alrededor del mundo, pero no hemos ido a Guatemala. Me inscribí para la delegación de Santa Juana de Arco a TN2 en el 2020, pero esa delegación fue cancelada por COVID. Sin embargo, durante la preparación, y al ser parte de la comunidad de Iglesias Hermanas, me he dado cuenta lo especial que es este ministerio en nuestra parroquia y para mis nuevos amigos que ahora conozco por medio de las delegaciones virtuales, llamadas de zoom y Skype. He oído el impacto que nuestro aporte praa las becas hace en las vidas de los jóvenes en la parroquia de TN2, y me he inspirado gracias al maravilloso trabaja del grupo de mujeres, también me he maravillado de la dedicación de los miembros de allá que cuidan de su comunidad durante esta pandemia, muy similar a lo que hemos hecho aquí en Santa Juana. Las historias de resistencia y perseverancia son sorprendentes, y estoy ansiosa de algún día conocer a mis nuevos amigos en persona.
Mindy:– Recuerdo la primera vez que fui a una delegación a TN2. Lo que me llamó la atención fue el sentido tan fuerte de comunidad que existe. La gente vive con su familia, y otros familiares viven cerca. Siempre se visitan para verse los unos a los otros, a prestar algo, a revolver algo, a discutir algo, o a pedir consejos. Ellos muy felizmente se saludan en la calle – paran a preguntar o discutir algún tema, o para preguntar por algún familiar enfermo. Ellos tienen su red de respuesta a emergencias porque los servicios de gobierno no siempre están disponibles. Me di cuenta como nuestra cultura en los EEUU de individualismo crea un sentimiento de que cada persona es responsable de sí misma, y esto ha creado un déficit de comunidad. Sabía que esto era algo que quería enfrentar en mi vida, así que participé profundamente en Santa Juana y el comité de Iglesias Hermanas. Y aún estoy aquí con una comunidad en la que sé que puedo confiar y ellos pueden contar conmigo. En los tiempos difíciles y los tiempos felices de mi vida, significa mucho el saber que estoy apoyada por una comunidad global – aquí en Santa Juana y en Tierra Nueva 2.
Cathy:- Creo que la razón principal por la que participo en los ministerios de Bienvenida al Extraño e Iglesias Hermanas es por el regalo de construir relaciones a través del encuentro y el acompañamiento. Con Bienvenida al Extraño, he viajado a la frontera sur de los EEUU y conocido personas que buscan asilo en nuestro país. Aquí en nuestra ciudad, continuó acompañando a una joven madre y su hijo de Uganda, mientras reconstruyen su vida. Estos encuentros han hecho una diferencia tremenda en mi vida, y yo, al unirme a Iglesias Hermanas estoy en busca de más. Estoy ansiosa de hacer mi peregrinaje a nuestra Iglesia Hermana con los brazos abiertos y el corazón abierto, para crecer en la fe con nuestros amigos de Tierra Nueva 2.
Mindy:– Estoy en mi tercera carrera profesional, empezando como consultora tecnológica, luego comercio justo y ahora con abogacía por el medio ambiente. Esa transición ha sido influenciada por mi involucramiento en Iglesias Hermanas, el cual me ha dado un sentido de lugar en la comunidad global y mi responsabilidad de actuar por la justicia social. Me ha movido de un entendimiento académico de problemas globales a un entendimiento personal – de mi cabeza a mi corazón. Ahora soy una ciudadana del mundo. Puedo ver el impacto de las políticas y comportamientos en los EEUU en mi familia de TN2, y como el cambio climático está exacerbando esos problemas. Aunque trabajo localmente, pienso globalmente.
Cathy:– En nuestros corazones, sabemos del poder de las relaciones para transformarnos a nosotros y a nuestro mundo. Hoy, escuchamos las palabras del Papa Francisco, que pudo haberse referido a Iglesias Hermanas cuando dijo: “Soñemos, que, como una sola familia humana, como viajeros compartiendo la misma carne, como hijos de el mismo planeta el cual es nuestro hogar, cada uno de nosotros brindando la riqueza de nuestras creencias y convicciones, cada uno de nosotros con nuestra voz, hermanos y hermanas todos”.
Mindy:- Nuestro hermanamiento es un compromiso a largo plazo. En 27 años, hemos observado cada uno de nosotros crecer y cambiar, y hemos llorado la partida de queridos amigos. Hemos caminado y rezado a través de eventos mundiales, perdidas y luchas e injusticias, juntos. Hemos carcajeado mientras cocinamos, hemos cantado, bailado, jugado Twister y hemos temblado de frio caminando juntos sobre el congelado lago Grove. Nos hemos desafiado a vernos más cercanamente y mejorar como individuos y comunidades viviendo el llamado del Evangelio.
